Cloud Cost Optimization: Saving Money Without Sacrificing Performance
One common misconception about cloud computing is that moving to AWS or Azure automatically reduces costs. In reality, poorly managed cloud resources can become expensive very quickly.
As a Cloud Architect, I believe cost optimization should be part of the architecture from day one.
Here are 5 practical ways to optimize cloud spending:
Right-size resources: Choose compute and database capacity based on actual workload requirements.
Remove idle resources: Identify unused virtual machines, unattached disks, and outdated snapshots.
Use auto-scaling: Match resource capacity to demand instead of running everything at maximum capacity.
Monitor spending: Use budgets, cost alerts, and resource tags to understand where money is going.
Review architecture regularly: Revisit storage tiers, data transfer costs, and managed service pricing as workloads evolve.
Remember: Cost optimization isn't simply about choosing the cheapest service. It's about getting the right performance, security, and reliability for every rupee spent.
For BFSI workloads, cost decisions must also account for compliance, data protection, and availability requirements.
Cloud professionals, what's your biggest cloud cost challenge: compute, storage, or data transfer?
