âš¡ PostgreSQL Performance: Sometimes, the Solution Isn't More Hardware.
As backend engineers, we often focus on making our applications faster by adding more resources.
But sometimes, the real improvement comes from understanding how our data is stored and queried.
A few things I pay attention to when optimizing PostgreSQL:
🔹 Query execution plans: Use EXPLAIN ANALYZE to identify expensive operations.
🔹 Indexing: Create indexes based on actual query patterns, not assumptions.
🔹 Partitioning: For large datasets, partitioning can help reduce the amount of data scanned by suitable queries.
🔹 Connection management: Use connection pooling to avoid unnecessary database connection overhead.
🔹 Measurement: Benchmark before and after every optimization. Never assume a change made things faster.
One of the most interesting parts of backend engineering is discovering how small architectural decisions can have a significant impact on performance.
The goal isn't just to make queries faster. It's to build systems that remain reliable as data and traffic grow.
