Batch Processing vs. Stream Processing: How Do You Choose?
Not every data problem needs real-time processing. Sometimes, a well-designed batch pipeline is all you need!
As Data Engineers, choosing the right processing approach depends on how quickly the business needs the data and how much complexity the system can handle.
Batch Processing
Processes data in scheduled groups. It's ideal for daily reports, historical analysis, and large-scale transformations.
Stream Processing
Processes events continuously as they arrive. It's useful for real-time monitoring, fraud detection, and live dashboards.
Consider Data Freshness
Ask how quickly the data must be available. Seconds, minutes, or hours can lead to very different architectures.
Think About Cost and Complexity
Real-time systems can introduce additional operational overhead. Don't choose streaming just because it sounds more advanced.
Plan for Failures and Late Data
Retries, duplicate events, out-of-order records, and recovery strategies matter in both approaches.
My takeaway: The best data architecture isn't necessarily the fastest one. It's the one that meets business requirements reliably without unnecessary complexity.
Data Engineers: Would you choose batch or streaming for a sales analytics dashboard that refreshes every 15 minutes? And why?
