A year ago, most of my day went into typing code. Today an AI assistant drafts a working first version of a feature in minutes, and the bottleneck has moved somewhere else entirely: deciding what to build, explaining it clearly, and checking that what comes back is actually right.
That shift changes what makes a developer valuable. Speed of typing matters less every month. Clear thinking, good taste and careful review matter more than ever.
🧠 What I'm seeing in practice:
1️⃣ Design first, prompt second. A fuzzy idea gets you fuzzy code. Writing two lines about the "what" and the "why" before asking for anything saves hours later.
2️⃣ Review like it's a teammate's pull request. AI-written code looks confident even when it's wrong. Read every line, question every assumption, and never merge what you don't understand.
3️⃣ Tests are your safety net. The faster code gets written, the more you need automated checks that prove it still works tomorrow.
4️⃣ Fundamentals still win. Knowing how systems, databases and networks behave is what lets you spot the subtle bug the AI didn't.
AI isn't replacing developers. It's replacing the boring parts of the job and raising the bar for everything else.
💬 How has AI changed the way you work? Has it made you faster, or just busier? I'd love to hear your experience in the comments.
