Being a Great Engineer Is One Thing. Helping Others Become Great Engineers Is Leadership.
One lesson I've learned throughout my engineering journey is that individual performance and team success are two different things.
A strong engineering team needs more than technical expertise. It needs trust, clarity, and a culture where people feel comfortable learning and sharing ideas.
Here are 4 practices I value as an engineering leader:
Give context, not just tasks. People do better work when they understand why it matters.
Make feedback a two-way conversation. Managers should be open to learning, too.
Celebrate progress, not just outcomes. Small improvements often lead to meaningful long-term results.
Create space for ownership. Let engineers make decisions, experiment, and grow.
The goal isn't to build a team that depends on one person for every answer. It's to build a team that can solve problems confidently together.
What's one quality you value most in an engineering manager: technical expertise, communication, or mentorship?
