A Great Android App Should Work Even When the Internet Doesn't!
One thing I find interesting about Android development is that a smooth user experience isn't just about beautiful UI. It's also about how an app behaves when the network is slow, unavailable, or unreliable.
Here are 5 things worth considering when building a reliable Android app:
1. Design for Offline-First
Use local storage, such as Room, to let users access important data even without an internet connection.
2. Make UI State Predictable
With Jetpack Compose, managing UI state carefully helps keep the interface consistent as data changes.
3. Optimize App Startup
Avoid unnecessary work during launch and measure startup performance instead of guessing where delays occur.
4. Reduce App Size
Use Android App Bundles, resource optimization, and R8 where appropriate to reduce download size.
5. Handle Network Failures Gracefully
Provide useful loading, error, retry, and synchronization states instead of leaving users staring at a blank screen.
💡 The key takeaway: A good mobile app isn't defined only by how it performs under perfect conditions. It's defined by how reliably it works in real-world situations.
I'm also exploring Kotlin Multiplatform and how shared business logic can help teams build for multiple platforms.
Android developers: What's your biggest challenge when building production apps — performance, offline support, app size, or state management?
