A Product Manager's Job Isn't to Say Yes to Every Feature!
Working on digital payment and credit products has taught me an important lesson: a successful product isn't built by adding more features. It's built by solving the right problems.
Here are 5 principles I believe every product team should follow:
1. Start With the User Problem
Before writing a PRD, understand what users are struggling with and why it matters.
2. Define Success Clearly
Choose meaningful metrics such as task completion rate, payment success rate, and user retention instead of measuring success only by downloads.
3. Prioritize Ruthlessly
Not every good idea needs to be built immediately. Focus on features that deliver the highest user and business value.
4. Write Clear PRDs
A good product requirement document explains the problem, expected behavior, edge cases, and success criteria so engineers can build with confidence.
5. Learn to Say No
Saying no to a low-impact feature creates room to focus on what truly matters.
My biggest takeaway: Product management is about making thoughtful trade-offs, not just managing a roadmap.
Especially in fintech, trust, reliability, and simplicity are just as important as innovation.
Product managers: What's harder for you — deciding what to build, prioritizing the roadmap, or convincing stakeholders what not to build?
