☁️ Your Cloud Bill Is High. But Are You Paying for What You Actually Need?
Cloud optimization isn't just about choosing a cheaper instance. It's about understanding where your money goes and eliminating waste without compromising reliability or security.
Here are five areas I review when thinking about cloud cost optimization:
🔹 NAT Gateway traffic: Understand data processing charges and whether traffic can use more cost-effective network paths.
🔹 Idle resources: Identify unattached volumes, unused load balancers, and underutilized compute resources.
🔹 Right-sizing: Match compute and database capacity to actual workloads.
🔹 Storage lifecycle policies: Move eligible data to more cost-effective storage tiers.
🔹 Monitoring and accountability: Use cost dashboards, budgets, and alerts to catch unexpected spending early.
One important lesson: the cheapest architecture isn't always the best architecture.
The goal is to find the right balance between cost, performance, security, and availability.
