⚙️ System Design Has No Perfect Answer. Only Trade-offs.
One lesson I've learned from building backend systems over the years is that the best architecture isn't necessarily the most complex one.
It's the one that solves the problem while keeping reliability, scalability, and operational complexity under control.
When designing distributed systems, I keep coming back to five questions:
🔹 Consistency: How fresh does the data need to be?
🔹 Availability: What should happen when a dependency fails?
🔹 Scalability: Which component becomes the bottleneck as traffic grows?
🔹 Data partitioning: How will the system behave as the dataset gets larger?
🔹 Operational complexity: Can the team actually run and debug this architecture in production?
A design that works perfectly on a whiteboard can behave very differently under real traffic and partial failures.
That's why I believe system design is less about memorizing patterns and more about understanding constraints, identifying trade-offs, and making deliberate decisions.
💬 What's one system design decision you've changed your mind about after seeing it run in production?
