Building Software at a Startup: It's More Than Just Writing Code!
Working in a startup environment teaches you something important: engineering isn't just about making features work. It's about making them reliable, maintainable, and easy to improve.
Here are 5 lessons I keep coming back to:
1. Understand the Problem First
Before writing code, understand what the user actually needs. The simplest solution is often the most effective.
2. Design Better APIs
Consistent response formats, clear error messages, and proper validation make APIs easier to use and debug.
3. Think Beyond the Happy Path
What happens when the API fails, the network is slow, or the user submits invalid data? Good software handles these situations gracefully.
4. Keep Code Maintainable
Readable code, reusable components, and meaningful names help the entire team move faster.
5. Debug with Curiosity
Instead of just fixing the symptom, find the root cause. Every bug is an opportunity to understand the system better.
One thing I've learned: Moving fast doesn't mean skipping good engineering practices. It means making thoughtful decisions without creating unnecessary complexity.
Building, learning, debugging, and improving — one feature at a time.
Software engineers: What's one engineering lesson you learned only after working on a real project?
