Your LLM Sounds Confident. But Is It Actually Correct?
One of the biggest challenges in building Generative AI applications is that an LLM can produce a convincing answer that is factually incorrect.
In production, a fluent response isn't necessarily a trustworthy response.
Here are 5 practical ways to improve LLM reliability:
1. Ground Answers in Trusted Data
Use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to provide relevant context from reliable sources.
2. Improve Retrieval Quality
Experiment with chunk sizes, metadata filters, hybrid search, and reranking to retrieve more relevant information.
3. Give Clear Instructions
Define what the model should do when information is missing, ambiguous, or unsupported by the available context.
4. Evaluate With Real Examples
Build a test dataset containing normal questions, edge cases, and questions that cannot be answered from your documents.
5. Measure More Than Accuracy
Track faithfulness, retrieval relevance, latency, cost, and how often the system correctly abstains when it lacks sufficient evidence.
An important lesson: Adding more context doesn't automatically make an AI system better. The quality of that context and the way you evaluate results matter just as much.
Building reliable AI isn't about eliminating every possible mistake. It's about measuring failures, reducing risks, and making the system's limitations clear.
AI engineers: What's worked best for you when improving LLM reliability — better retrieval, stronger evaluation, or prompt engineering?
