Your React app doesn't always need more optimization. Sometimes, it just needs fewer re-renders. ⚛️
One thing I've learned while working on frontend experiences is that adding useMemo, useCallback, and React.memo everywhere isn't the same as writing performant React code.
Before optimizing, I focus on a few things:
🔹 Understand the problem first:- Use React DevTools
Profiler to identify unnecessary or expensive renders.
🔹 Keep state close to where it's needed:- Not every state update needs to trigger a large part of the component tree.
🔹 Avoid premature optimization:- Memoization adds complexity and isn't always beneficial.
🔹 Measure before and after:- If there's no meaningful improvement, the optimization might not be worth it.
When you're building experiences like checkout flows, performance isn't just a technical metric. It affects how smoothly people can complete an important task.
My rule of thumb: Measure first. Optimize second. Keep it simple.
What's one React performance mistake you've seen developers make repeatedly?
