One thing I've started doing before adding another dependency: checking whether the browser can already do it.
We replaced a small utility package with native browser APIs last week and removed a surprisingly large chunk from the dependency tree.
Not saying "never use libraries". Just worth asking whether you actually need one before adding another package to the project.
Fewer dependencies, fewer things to update later.
