The API worked perfectly… until real users arrived.

The API worked perfectly… until real users arrived.
Everything looked good in development.
API responses were correct.
Payments were working.
Tests were passing.
Then production happened.
Network timeouts
Duplicate payment requests
Unexpected retries
Users refreshing the page at the worst possible moment
That's when I realized something important:
Writing an API is one thing. Making it reliable under real-world conditions is a completely different challenge.
Now, whenever I work on booking or payment APIs, I think beyond the happy path:
What happens if the request is retried?
Can the same payment be processed twice?
What if the response fails but the payment succeeds?
Are my logs good enough to debug the issue?
Because clean code is important, but reliable software is what earns users' trust.
Every production bug teaches you something your tutorials probably didn't.
What's one production bug that taught you a lesson you'll never forget?
